Going Up!

I remember when elevators had a uniformed man taking people from floor to floor in business/hotel/apt buildings. I had always wondered why elevator operators were necessary-they just stood there pushing buttons, holding the doors, greeting people. I mean, did businesses really think customers/clients wouldn't know how to push a button to their respective floor? The operators looked good in their uniforms, although my guess is a lot of them had to endure inhaling a mixture of cloying perfumes, cigarette smoke, body odors. Yuck! More likely than not these people were single (what wife could stand the smell?) I wonder where they all went once the job was practically eliminated....oh, I know! They became night club or casino greeters. Both occupations have a lot in common. I know there are some elevator operators left somewhere; you know the type-holding their clients fur baby "Fifi".
